Philips Lighting, a division of royal Philips Electronics, is a global manufacturer and exporter of high end consumer goods with more than 30,000 employees and annual sales exceeding $5 billion.
Atos Origin has completed more than 30 successful global rollouts of Web Content Management (WCM) solutions for Philips Lighting. Atos Origin’s strategy, development and implementation of the Interwoven TeamSite-based platform were carried out to structure Philips Lighting’s existing “spaghetti” of web content into a consistent and comprehensive single face to their customer.
The focus of the project was not primarily on realizing cost savings from the site and content creation processes, but instead geared specifically toward developing a content strategy and design and implementation of a system that 1) met specific requirements of the business, and (2) could be efficiently maintained and expanded.
While Atos Origin was contracted to deliver the overall technical project management and architectural design, we were also able to make significant contributions during the proof-of-concept phase to the development of an air-tight business case.
Our scope was truly end-to-end, beginning with pre-design business case and requirements definition, and continuing through deployment to the development of a highly successful Philips Lighting-specific user training program.
The most daunting challenges of this initiative included implementation of 34 different language versions and migration of existing content and authoring processes into a new content management strategy. The resistance to this migration was most apparent was we strove to convince Philips Lighting’s smaller country organizations of the advantages of the new tool. Through our persistence and a focus on building credibility with the individual country teams, the level of acceptance increased rapidly.
On completion, the project was quite successful at meeting its goal to empower content editors to manage and contribute content locally through pre-defined content templates.
The Project Manager from Philips Lighting reported: “Prior to the implementation, we expected to be able to standardize only 80 percent of the site templates. In the end however, it turned out to be nearly 100 percent, resulting is an even more flexible set-up. The recent change in the Philips house-style for instance, was implemented in a matter of minutes, rather then months in the old situation.”
The Atos Origin solution successfully re-engineered the editorial workflows to reduce lead-time for publication while supporting the various authoring processes and metadata. Philips Lighting was provided with a centralized tool with decentralized control. Atos Origin was able to facilitate global consensus on strategy while providing flexibility and adaptability to work with emerging multi-media formats.
And to the delight of the Philips Lighting executive team, not only were all stakeholders delighted with the end result, the project was delivered on time and within budget.
